Have you ever wondered how long a dog can hold its pee? If you own a dog and have to leave him home alone for a while, chances are you thought about this before. There is no single answer to this because it will depend on several factors. There are a few questions you might want to ask yourself in order to get to the answer.

First, is your pet housetrained? Second, how old is he? Third, what is his breed? Fourth, how much water does your dog drink in a day? And the last but the most important question we have, does he have any health issues? Find out how each of these factors affects your pet’s ability to hold his pee.

How Long Can Housetrained Dogs Hold Their Pee?

On average, a housetrained dog can hold his pee for up to eight hours. It’s recommended that you let your pet relieve himself by taking him outdoors at least three times a day. If you cannot be around the entire day, assign the task to somebody else.

It matters that there is someone who can take the dog out to pee while you are not around. It’s also worth getting a pet sitter who would be there for your pet in case you need to travel and leave him at home.

Do Adult Dogs Hold Their Pee for Longer than Puppies?

Yes. Compared to younger dogs, adult dogs can hold their pee for longer especially if they were housetrained. This is because puppies often experience bladder challenges. This makes it difficult for them to hold their urine. This normally resolves on its own once a pup reached the first year of his life.

In spite of this, you can housetrain a dog as early as 12 weeks. For some pups, owners might need to wait until they are four months old to start training. It’s true that pups have bladder challenges, but they already have enough control of their bladder at this age.

House training is by far the most challenging aspect of parenting a dog. There is no shortcut to housetraining a dog. It takes time and effort to teach a dog that he is not supposed to urinate inside the house.

With persistence, you can potty-train your dog in no time. If you want to be effective in training your pet, apply positive reinforcement. There are different techniques to do this but the easiest one involves giving your pet something he really likes. It’s best to offer the treat as soon as he goes.

Can you housetrain a dog at any age? Yes, it’s possible to train a dog regardless of his age. When you have a new dog in the house, you may need to take him out more often. This applies to adult dogs that were not yet housetrained.

How often do puppies pee in a day? This can differ for every dog, but it’s recommended that you take your pup for a walk every hour so he can relieve himself. Just like us humans, they need to urinate first thing in the morning and before sleeping at night.

What To Do When Housetrained Pup Starts Peeing Inside

This is a clear indication that something is wrong inside your pet’s body if he’s trained to pee outside but suddenly starts urinating in the house. There are two possible reasons for this. It’s either a health problem or there is a change in his behavior due to outside influences.

Adult dogs with urinary tract infection cannot seem to hold their pee in, causing them to urinate inside the house. UTIs should be treated immediately before they lead to serious medical problems. Dogs suffering from a UTI are usually prescribed antibiotics but your vet may also recommend changing your dog’s diet and increasing his water intake per day.

If you have a senior dog and he started urinating inside, it is possible that it’s because of arthritis. His joints may be so painful that he is no longer inclined to go outside. Although age is the leading culprit, there are other reasons why dogs suffer from arthritis.

Arthritis can be because of an injury your pet had in the past. In some dogs, it is often the result of metabolic problems. So if your pet is obese or prone to having diabetes, it’s not impossible for him to develop arthritis as well.

If you suspect that it’s due to medical reasons, better see your vet as soon as possible so your pet can receive the proper diagnosis. Your vet will likely perform a urinalysis to see if there’s an infection or if there are crystals present in the urine. The urinalysis may be followed by ultrasound and blood tests to fully determine the cause.

If you already consulted your vet and found that Fido is perfectly healthy, you may consider the other reason for house soiling: behavior problems. Is there something that is stressing your pet lately? Are there changes in your house? Does he do it when a new person comes to your house and approaches him?

The reason for urinating may be fear. It’s either submissive urination or excitement urination. As the name suggests, excitement urination takes place when someone greets or gives affection to your dog. On the other hand, submissive urination may happen when someone stands over to physically discipline the pet.

The Bottom Line

A dog can hold his pee for several hours, given that he has been housetrained. Otherwise, you might need to exert more effort in training him. There are different strategies you can apply to housetrain a dog but regardless of that, it matters to be patient while potty-training your pet.
